For over three decades, Lorraine Robson has shaped a distinguished career from her studio in Scotland, where she continues to create captivating sculpture and ceramics. An alumna of Edinburgh College of Art, where she studied sculpture, Lorraine brings a profound understanding of form and material to her practice.
Her ceramics are a testament to her unique vision: beautiful, hand-built works that respectfully nod to ancient and primitive techniques while boldly embracing contemporary influences.
Though not designed for function, her pieces, often rooted in the classic vessel form, draw from a vast historical and cultural tapestry, crafted using ancient traditional methods such as coiling, pinching, slab construction, slump moulding, and altering, now complemented by slip-casting from her own studio-made plaster moulds.
Lorraine's artistic journey has taken her far beyond the studio.
She has represented the UK in esteemed international ceramic competitions in Austria, Taiwan, Croatia, the USA, and within the UK.
Her excellence was recognized by the Crafts Council, leading to her selection to promote the best of contemporary UK craft internationally for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with her work proudly housed in their permanent collection at the Ambassador's residence in Islamabad.
Beyond her studio practice, Lorraine is deeply committed to art education and public engagement. She has led numerous arts residencies in Scottish schools, museums, and communities, fostering creativity among children and adults alike.
Her dedication was highlighted when she received National Lottery funding via Creative Scotland to present her installation at Craft Council Collect 2020, an impactful work later featured in the SSA 130 years exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy.
Currently, Lorraine is enthusiastically returning to hand-built ceramics, delving into research and development for a new series inspired by the ocean and environmental themes.
